Pepperell held a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, with no town business conducted. Fire Chief Joseph Rock led the reading of the names of the 412 first responders killed that day, assisted by retired Firefighter/EMT Vincent Messina and others, and delivered remarks urging residents to "show up" and "take care of each other." Bob Connery, a member of American Legion Post 213 and VFW Post 3291, placed a memorial flag and told attendees that 283 more NYPD officers and 438 more FDNY members have died since 2001 from World Trade Center-related illness, calling the toxins "carcinogens, which wreak havoc on these brave first responders and recovery workers years later." Lee McTighe of a local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter gave the invocation, Maureen Ma sang the National Anthem, and the Townsend American Legion Rifle Squad closed the program with a three-volley salute.
