Winchester School Committee Backs Arts and Letters as New Elementary Literacy Curriculum

PEPPERELL — March 31, 2026 — Winchester schools recommend Arts and Letters K-5 literacy curriculum after yearlong dual pilot. The Winchester School Committee received a formal staff recommendation Tuesday to adopt the Arts and Letters curriculum for all elementary grades, ending a two-year selection process that included a simultaneous yearlong pilot of Arts and Letters and EL Education at Lincoln, Morocco, and Ambrose schools. Survey data compiled by outside consultant CES showed 100 percent of educators who piloted Arts and Letters recommended adoption, with 96 percent doing so without reservation; by contrast, 74 percent of respondents in the EL Education pilot did not recommend that program. Literacy coordinator Melissa told the committee that 89 percent of the district's elementary workforce completed the summative survey. Pilot teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade described the knowledge-building curriculum as producing measurable gains in student writing, cross-curricular engagement, and equitable access for students with IEPs and multilingual learners. Full K-5 implementation is planned for fall 2026, with professional development, family information sessions, and a new differentiation block called the "literacy lab" still in development.
