Pepperell Ag panel finalizes Open Farm Day push

Agricultural Commission · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Pepperell Agricultural Commission finalizes Open Farm Day marketing and clashes over hydroponic zoning language. Member Eric Piper reported outreach to dozens of regional media outlets and a Westford Patch placement reaching 38 communities, with roughly $255 in expenses logged and a single Facebook flyer post drawing more than 25,000 views. Co-Chair Lucille McKain objected to zoning language that could be read as endorsing chemical-dependent indoor farming, citing Little Leaf Farms' Devens operation: "Little Leaf is going to use chemicals.

I heard it from a grower there myself. Is that what we really want to promote?" A member identified as Tony countered that container-based hydroponics deserves a place in every zoning district. The commission also set a $50 Grange rental budget for a farmer appreciation dinner and approved its September 3 minutes and adjournment by unanimous voice vote.
